Tips for Backyard Sun Protection

Home Improvement

Nothing is more relaxing than spending a warm day in the backyard gardening or reading. However, if you spend substantial time outdoors, you need to take precautions to prevent skin damage or cancer. Here are several tips for sun protection while enjoying your backyard.

Wear Sunblock Every Day

Did you know that 90% of skin damage is due to the sun? Even if you’re just spending a little time in your yard, a sunblock of at least 30 SPF will protect you from the sun’s damaging UV rays. Be sure to slather on sunscreen even if the day is overcast.

Have Ample Shade

Not everyone has tall trees for respite from the sun, so you might have to make your own shade. If you’ve got a backyard deck or pergola, a fantastic option is a canopy and outdoor Roman shades. The combination keeps you safe from the sun, whether it’s directly overhead or coming in at an angle.

Stay Properly Hydrated

When you’re spending time outside in the heat, be sure you stay properly hydrated. Dehydration goes hand-in-hand with heatstroke and causes headache, dizziness and vomiting. By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated, so it’s important to sip cool water throughout the day.

Avoid the Sun’s Peak Hours

Another way to stay safe from the sun is to simply avoid peak hours. Depending on where you live, these hours range from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and it’s when the sun’s rays are the most powerful. If you have to be outside during this time, make sure your skin is protected and wear a hat.

If your backyard is your happy place, keep it that way by protecting yourself from the sun. By using sunblock and creating enough shade, you can make the most of your yard time in a healthy way.
